I'd topped up the same feeder for years without once thinking about what the rain was doing to the seed underneath. Swapped it in October. The robins have barely left since.

Bought one for my mum and ended up ordering a second for ourselves. The squirrel has given up entirely, which my father-in-law finds very funny.

Proper bit of kit. It's been through a storm and two hard frosts and hasn't shifted an inch. Does what it says.

We make the things we went looking for and couldn't find.

My nan Dot fed the birds from her kitchen window in Shrewsbury for thirty-eight years. Rain, frost, the lot. When I took over her feeder one autumn, I finally looked properly at what was underneath — and it had gone green.

Wet seed grows mould, and mould makes small birds very ill indeed. She'd been doing it every morning for nearly four decades, with nothing but love, and nobody had ever told her.

That's the whole of it. GardenWing builds the kit that holds up through a British winter. Dot is ninety-one now and still asks after the robins.

Dry seed, every day of the British winter

A wide roof, set low. It keeps the seed dry when the rain is coming in sideways — which, from October, it usually is. The perch closes under anything heavier than a bird, so the squirrel gets a go and then gives up.
